Camden 50 launch at The House of Illustration

On 1st April 2015 we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the London Borough of Camden and the official launch the Camden50 programme.

Our launch party was hosted by the wonderful House of Illustration in King’s Cross who had just opened their new exhibition on 1950s American illustrator Mac Conner. He was one of an influential group of commercial artists working in Manhattan’s thriving advertising and publishing scene and the exhibition includes 70 original works, many hand-painted, that capture the spirit of mid-20th Century America.

To complement and critique the exhibition from a feminist perspective, Camden50’s Ladies of the Press* were on hand to create their first zine! This live demo-press was made throughout the night via conversations with attendees. They talked to the Mayor of Camden, to staff at House of Illustration, to the other Camden 50 artists and, of course, to members of the public (who were intrigued by this impromptu press team with rainbow hair!)
