Ladies of the Press* explored the history of women in Camden by democratically producing eight zines, fly posters and pamphlets on the go, and in situ with local residents, visitors and participants at Camden50 projects.
Project Description
Camden is rich in culture and has been at the forefront of many key moments in political history. For the Camden 50 the Ladies of the Press* chose to particularly focus on and celebrate the Women of Camden and the impact they have had on the Borough. Ladies of the Press*, an electric duo who democratically produce zines, fly posters, pamphlets on the go and in situ with participants, they celebrated the women of Camden from the last 50 years.
Via pop up events in various sites and interactions with people on the streets of Camden, Ladies of the Press* challenged conceptions of engagement and went straight to audiences with their mobile printing press: a pair of pink bicycles kitted out with printers! As well as at events and talks and a residency at Camden Arts Centre looking at their archive of press cuttings.
Informed by DIY cultures, grass roots activism and inspired by Camden’s rich history of radical press they made new works in print for the 50th celebrations. These were printed instantly and promoted the hard working and revolutionary women of Camden.
About the Artist
The Ladies of the Press* is made up of artists Ana Čavić and Renée O’Drobinak. They have been working together in London since 2007 and have performed at institutions including the Institute of Contemporary Art, Whitechapel Gallery, Tate Modern, KIBLIX Festival in Slovenia and the Kulturni Centar GRAD, Serbia.
Ladies of the Press* decidedly multifarious practice involves mincing together print and performance in impromptu settings, often with unexpected results, which will be no different for Camden 50. Via pop up events in various sites and interactions with people on the streets of Camden they will challenge conceptions of engagement, celebrate the Women of Camden and print the results with their mobile printing press: a pair of pink bicycles kitted out with printers. Their performances play on the rules of publishing, press and grass roots activism, and locate it firmly in contemporary art practice.
